EASY HERB GROWIN’

easy herb gardening

Growing herbs is one of the easiest ways to venture into gardening and can be done by anyone, anywhere. Here, Earth Mamma contributor Sheila shares the process on getting started.

I love growing my own herbs. They smell wonderful and it is so great to have fresh herbs for cooking. They aren’t cheap in the grocery store but if you grow your own you will have an endless supply all summer. There is nothing like the smell of fresh basil!

I like to plant my herbs in separate pots. That way they don’t take nutrients from each other. Besides they look so pretty grouped together! This year I planted a few types of basil, rosemary, oregano and sage. Also lavender because it smells beautiful and attracts butterflies!

Make sure your pot is big enough, at least 10 inches. Herbs planted in small pots will dry out too quickly and won’t grow as well. The pots need to have drainage as well.

Don’t use soil that you would use in your garden. You need potting soil which drains more quickly and won’t rot the roots.

Water the herbs about 10 minutes before planting. Dig a hole so that the herb will be at the same soil depth as it was in the container you bought it in. Pat the soil down around the herb and give it a good drink of water.

Herbs love the sun so find a sunny spot. Water regularly but don’t drown them. Happy harvesting!
