DIY BEE BATH

Tasha is a gardener and beekeeper that lives in Miami, Florida. She is also the co-founder and CEO of Palm Pike, a sustainable apiary that produces raw honey, and also specializes in live bee removal, saving them from extermination.

Here she shares a super fun and easy DIY bee bath that’s a great way to help our pollinators.

Says Tasha, “As things start to heat up, there’s one important element that everyone needs more of, and that’s WATER! One of the best ways to help our pollinators is by providing a water source in your yard. Here’s an extremely simple way to give bees and butterflies a nice drink on a hot day.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Shallow Dish
Rocks or Marbles
Water

Get your shallow dish and fill it with some rocks. You can use any rocks or marbles. Fill the dish about halfway with water or just until the water touches the edge of the rocks! I’ve noticed that keeping it low allows the bees to get a drink without falling in. If you live in a humid area with lots of mosquitoes like I do, make sure to keep the dish very clean and in direct sunlight. This allows the water to evaporate instead of sit still, which will attract mosquitoes. Keeping it clean also keeps the mosquitoes away since there won’t be a food source for the larvae!

Within a few weeks, you should see some bees in your bee bath. If you’re interested in attracting more pollinators to your yard, make sure to plant a wide variety of native wildflowers! Between the flowers and your new bee bath, your yard will be a pollinator oasis.”
