IN MEXICO WITH KAITIE

My Canadian friend Kaitie went to Mexico last year and hasn’t been back after falling in love with both the city and her man, Criss. Here she shares some moments and photos of her cozy life there.

What first brought you to Mexico City?

I first came to Mexico City in 2014 for a modeling contract. I stayed for four months and felt enraptured by the country. I recently returned in August 2015 and have been living here since then. Mexico is a very magical country with such beautiful places and wonders to discover! I truly fell in love with the city here. I’ll be returning to Canada shortly, but then back to Mexico for August. (And I can’t wait!)

What made you decide to stay?

The second time here in Mexico was due to a couple of things. The first being my work; it was and has been plentiful and always a fun time. The second being my man; I met Criss back in August and it truly was love at first sight. He has been so supportive and loving, as well as teaching me more Spanish.

What’s a typical day like for you?

A typical day would be to wake up to make an energizing breakfast, do my makeup, and head out to castings. In between castings I’ll visit my favourite parks (which are so lush here in Mexico!) and grab a freshly made juice from the street. Making my way back home, I’ll sometimes go to the gym, though most times I’m returning to teach English. My nights are filled with Netflix, dark chocolate and cuddles.

How’s your Spanish?

I’m usually too shy to say, but I must toot my own horn here and say, IT’S BANGIN! I took a Spanish class for a year in university, and with traveling it’s only gotten better (though my English seems worse! Haha). Especially with living in Mexico for eight months now, I am speaking everyday. Criss is also from Argentina, so he and his family are teaching me Spanish daily. I really do love the language.

What’s your favourite hang-out spot?

My favourite spot in Mexico City is “Parque Mexico” in Colonia Condesa. It’s filled with nature, puppies, laughter, and fresh grub (juices, baked sweet potato, “Algeria” bars). It’s such a joyful place to go and relax with friends or on my own with my mandala books. I really find my peace there.

What do you love most about the culture there?

I love the hospitality and family values that the Mexican culture holds dear. I see families that are super close, including all generations. Even strangers are welcome! I find that being Canadian, I am used to accepting people into my home and family. By being from such a welcoming home in Canada, I find much comfort living in a place where one truly can feel like their home.
